Canberra

site investigation
photos from the site from capital circle (the inner circle), from the southernmost part of the site to the north

i'm glad it's relatively flat, although uneven surfaces could have been easily fixed with the flexible foundation

time to develop my brief.

the purpose of my space is a Political Strategy Institute (PSI)
think of a think tank/ CSIRO for politics.

I stole the organisational chart from the CSIRO to assess how much/what spaces I would need.

It's quite hard to see this image properly, so here is a link: http://www.csiro.au/files/files/ptf8.pdf

the government departments in Australia were then investigated and it was determined that 13 departments would be needed for the PSI

-  Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
- Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy
- Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency
- Department of Defence
- Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
- Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
- Department of Finance and Deregulation
- Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Department of Health and Ageing

project two

the districts of our masterplan were divided.

i got the area near capital circle.

we decided to explore our original idea of the moving stations as our main flexible element.
developing sketch ideas:

cable car like moving elements... or perhaps a tank like bottom to deal with differences in foundations and ease of moving

structure built over large tracks:

grid like foundation, slotting in walls to create structures when necessary:

we decided to implement a flexible foundation with modular architecture. flexible posts would secure the buildings in.
the flexible foundation could also be used as a flexible landscape and have different arrangements, i.e becoming an amphitheatre;

perhaps there could be a fixed core which modules are attached/detached?
one core services many modules

module shapes and configurations

Panels for Presentation and Project Statement

PROJECT STATEMENT

PANELS

criteria check

Capital Strategy (25%) : The panel presented and blog posted satisfies the following descriptions.
  • Your chosen strategy (flexible, mobile, distributed or virtual) was well investigated. diagrams exploring how we can design a flexible strategy
  • Your idea creatively identified problems and issues associated with ways capital city / parliament worked today in Australia and a speculation was made to suggest your idea could lead to an innovative solution. using research and statistics, why canberra wasn't the place to be
  • You summarised your investigation well and communicated all necessary information clearly and creatively with images and diagrams in your panel hopefully!
Capital Infrastructure and Presence (25%) : The panel presented and blog posted satisfies the following descriptions.
  • Your investigation to identify how your strategy could make use of the existing and/or new infrastructural support was good, unique and innovative. the idea to condense Canberra using and altering the existing infrastructure was developed
  • You made a good effort to identify how your chosen strategy could have its own unique presence and identity for people to identify that it constituted Australian Capital. condensing Canberra will allow residents and visitors to experience more of Canberra and be able to create and identify Canberras presence and national identity easier. the city will also become more pedestrian friendly and appealing to visit
  • You summarised your investigation well and communicated all necessary Information clearly and creatively with images and diagrams in your panel. hopefully!
Architectural Types & Purposes (20%) : The panel presented and blog posted satisfies the following descriptions.
  • Based on your investigation of Australian Capital Vision, you came up with an innovative suggestion to (partially) replace current Australian Parliament. taking consideration of the issues we raise (why it isn't the place to be- sparse, unpopular as a destination, parliament doesn't take consideration of the public) we came up with the solution of the modular think tank and tram line.
  • Excellent investigation and speculation are made to propose a range of services that your architectural entity is to provide. modular think tank will provide a range of architectural services, with flexible spaces that will be able to be altered in accordance to spatial needs.
  • You summarised your investigation well and communicated all necessary Information clearly and creatively with images and diagrams in your panel.
Architectural Presence & Identity (20%) : The panel presented and blog posted satisfies the following descriptions.
  • You conducted a unique and creative investigation into how your architectural entitiy can be identified and perceived as the capital of Australia by residents and visitors. the think tank will assist in advancing the industries within Australia, politically, education-wise, environmentally, transport-wise and culturally.
  • You summarised your investigation well and communicated all necessary Information clearly and creatively with images and diagrams in your panel.
